Journalists can now apply for accreditation for the 68th Session of the Nordic Council in Copenhagen from 1 to 3 November 2016. The annual Session is attended by politicians, prime ministers, opposition leaders, and government ministers from across the Nordic Region and is the biggest Nordic political forum.

A prominent topic at this year’s Session is the UN global goals for sustainable development and how the Nordic countries can work together to achieve them. The UN goals will be addressed during the summit of politicians in the Nordic Council and the Nordic prime ministers on Tuesday 1 November.

A theme event that focuses on the global goals is also being held in conjunction with Session and is due to take place on 31 October at UN City in Copenhagen. The event is open to journalists.

A series of topical political issues will be discussed during the Nordic Council Session, including integration and the labour market. These discussions will use as their starting point a report about the future of the labour market in the Nordic Region written by former Danish minister Poul Nielson. Current international issues, as well as security and defence issues will be addressed on 2 November when the ministers for foreign affairs and the ministers for defence present their reports to the Nordic Council’s politicians.

The Nordic prime ministers will also meet with the Baltic prime ministers and the Presidium of the Nordic Council during the Session. The Ministers for Nordic Co-operation will also meet with the Presidium of the Nordic Council. In addition, several other departmental ministers will hold meetings during the Session.

Nordic Council prize award ceremony

The winners of the Nordic Council prizes will be announced on Tuesday 1 October. The award ceremony will take place in the DR Concert Hall. A press conference and photo session will follow the ceremony.

Journalists wanting to cover the Nordic Council Session and prize award ceremony, and for the event at UN City must apply for accreditation no later than 28 October. A current and valid press card is required. Accreditation is also required for ministerial press conferences held in conjunction with the Session.

The Nordic Council has prebooked a number of hotel rooms for journalists. Please contact department co-ordinator Birgitte Haj by sending an e-mail to birhaj@norden.org or calling +45 60 39 42 07 for more information. The Nordic Council will not pay for the cost of the hotel.

The Nordic Council is the official inter-parliamentary body of the Nordic Region. The annual autumn session serves as a forum for political debate between the council and the Nordic governments, represented by the Nordic Council of Ministers.
