The President and Vice-President of the Nordic Council, Karin Åström and Hans Wallmark from Sweden, have decided at short notice to visit Poland and the Baltic nations in order to offer their support in regard to the tense situation in the Ukraine. For this reason, the leaders of the Nordic Council recently cancelled a planned visit of a Nordic Council delegation to Murmansk which should have taken place this week.

Karin Åström will start the visit in Vilnius on 20 March, then travel to Warsaw where she will be joined by Hans Wallmark on 21 March. Riga and Tallinn are on the agenda on Monday 24 March.

The President and Vice-President of the Nordic Council will meet the chairpersons of the Presidium of the Baltic Assembly and the chairpersons of the Committees on Foreign Affairs. In Warsaw they will meet the Marshal of the Senate.

Karin Åström and Hans Wallmark call on the Russian Federation to take steps to de-escalate the tense situation:

"The decision to hold an illegitimate referendum in Crimea on accession to the Russian Federation violates the Ukrainian constitution and is unacceptable. We call on the Russian Federation to take urgent steps to de-escalate the tense situation that could lead to a new Cold War in Europe."
