My personal views – and I have to emphasize that they are personal – are well known, despite the fact that the European Parliament some time ago took a decision by a substantial majority to ban the products. After a visit to Greenland last year and realizing the dependence of your citizens on seal and on the products of seals, I initiated a meeting, and I invited your Fisheries Minister to the European Parliament, and she met with a delegation there. In this way, she could make very clear first-hand the serious implications of this ban.

As you know, it is before the courts at the moment, in relation to trade measures. Who am I to call when that decision might be taken? Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later. I have met with the Canadians as well – they are also in the Inuit regions – and I know that they find this decision one that is unacceptable to them. But as far as Parliament is concerned, I would certainly be able to continue to be a voice for your people.
