Coming from an island, the Island of Ireland, I realize the importance of fisheries to coastal regions and coastal states, where there is no alternative source of employment. I think all of us can agree on this. We might disagree when it comes to mackerel, discards, total allowable catches or quotas, but I believe all of us agree that there must be sustainability. We are presently the custodians of the stocks of fish that are in our waters, whether they are European waters or coastal state waters, and we must protect those. Sustainability is something which all of us can accept.

In relation to discards, as you know, we are reviewing the Common Fisheries Policy at the moment, and we are putting a lot of emphasis on discards. But it is almost popular to suggest that we should ban discards completely. That is not practical. We must act in a practical way. My first recommendation is that we must minimize the amount of discards that we are landing. Therefore, funding should be provided for bigger meshes and nets, to leave the fish in the water to allow it to develop. If we take all white fish, there will be no fish there for the future. This is something that we are dealing with, and hopefully, we can find consensus that will be acceptable to all.
