Fourteen Nordic picture books, children’s books and youth novels have been nominated for the 2023 Nordic Council Children and Young People’s Literature Prize. This year’s nominees offer us timeless and life-affirming adventures where diversity is not a message in itself, but a premise that strengthens the credibility of the story. The winner will be announced in Oslo on 31 October.

The nominees span the entire Nordic Region with works from all countries and language areas. The works examine new family structures, inspire readers to see the world with new eyes, and illustrate the friendship of children despite language barriers and differences in behaviour patterns.

Here are the books that could win the 2023 Nordic Council Children and Young People’s Literature Prize:

Denmark

Finland

Faroe Islands

Greenland

Iceland

Norway

Sami language area

Sweden

Åland

The works have been nominated by the national members of the adjudication committee for the Nordic Council Children and Young People’s Literature Prize.

Winner to be announced on 31 October

The winner of the 2023 Nordic Council Children and Young People’s Literature Prize will be announced at an awards ceremony on 31 October in Oslo in conjunction with the Session of the Nordic Council. The winner will receive the Nordlys statuette and DKK 300,000.

Ten years of the Nordic Council Children and Young People’s Literature Prize

The Nordic Council Children and Young People’s Literature Prize was first awarded in 2013, and will therefore be celebrating ten years in 2023. The prize is the result of the long-standing efforts of the Nordic ministers for culture to strengthen and elevate children’s and young people’s literature in the Nordic Region.

The prize goes to a literary work for children and young people written in one of the Nordic languages. The work can combine text and images, and must meet high literary and artistic standards.

14 nordiske bildebøker, barnebøker og ungdomsromaner er nominert til Nordisk råds barne- og ungdomslitteraturpris 2023.
