Nordic Swan and PEF

This report aims to assess synergies and differences of Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) and the Nordic Swan Ecolabel in their approaches to environmental information of products. The Nordic Swan Ecolabel is a well-established tool to identify the ecologically best products and services. The EU Commission is developing a new ‘PEF’ tool, based on life cycle assessment. The report describes the methodological and operational approaches and illustrates similarities and differences using examples from three product groups. The report was used as a background material for an international workshop on PEF and Swan (4th May 2017). The project “Nordic Swan, Circular Economy and Product Environmental Footprint” is funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers.
