Madam Chair! First let me say how pleased I am to have the opportunity to intervene in this debate on EU cooperation. I would like to thank the Nordic Council for inviting the European Parliament to attend this meeting and for letting me participate in this debate. I am pleased that a number of my Nordic MEP colleagues are also attending.

The Nordic region continues to be of major interest to the European Union. It is a very dynamic part of Europe with strong institutional links to the EU, either by virtue of the EU or the EEA membership of the Nordic countries. The recent EU communication on the Arctic and the ongoing review of the Baltic Sea Strategy are an expression of the EU’s continuous and increased interest towards the Nordic region.

I welcome the Nordic Council’s intentions to intensify its cooperation with the EU institutions, including the European Parliament in particular. I believe that a more regular dialogue between the Nordic Council and the European Parliament would be of mutual benefit. I suggest that committee-to-committee contacts would play a key role in this.

An enhanced dialogue would be very timely indeed. I see a lot of parallels between the Nordic initiatives and the current EU agenda in areas such as energy, transport, and Arctic issues, but also for example when it comes to issues such as mutual recognition of professional qualifications. We need to ensure complementarity and synergies of the Nordic cooperation and EU and EEA initiatives on these issues. In addition, the EU and the Nordic countries should be compatible.

I have listened to the debate this morning. I must say that I find the debate on border obstacles very interesting. To give you a concrete example of the synergies between the EU and the Nordic initiatives, there are already a number of good EU initiatives. I refer to initiatives such as Your Europe, European Consumer Centres and SOLVIT. They are in place to help EU citizens and EU businesses to reap the benefits of the single market. For example, they are also helpful for Swedish people wishing to live and work in Finland. By virtue of their EEA membership, Iceland and Norway also participate in some of these EU initiatives.

In conclusion, let me say that the review of the EUs Baltic Sea Strategy should be used as an enhanced coordination with relevant Nordic Council initiatives. Joint priorities should be developed in concrete actions. I of course look forward to continued fruitful discussions in the course of this conference. Thank you!

Jag välkomnar Nordiska rådets avsikter att intensifiera samarbetet med EU-institutionerna, i synnerhet EU-parlamentet. Jag är övertygad om att en alltmer regelbunden dialog mellan Nordiska rådet och EU-parlamentet vore till ömsesidig nytta. Jag tror att kontakter mellan kommittéer kunde spela en nyckelroll i detta.

En utökad dialog vore verkligen mycket välkommen. Jag ser flera paralleller mellan nordiska initiativ och den nuvarande EU-agendan i frågor såsom energi, transport och arktiska frågor, men också till exempel när det gäller frågor såsom ömsesidigt erkännande av yrkeskvalifikationer. Vi måste se till att det nordiska samarbetet och EU- och EES-initiativen skapar synergier och kompletterar varandra i dessa frågor. Dessutom bör EU och de nordiska länderna vara kompatibla.

Jag lyssnade på debatten i morse. Jag måste säga att jag finner gränshindersdebatten mycket intressant. För att ge er ett konkret exempel på synergierna mellan EU och de nordiska initiativen så finns det redan ett antal bra EU-initiativ. Jag hänvisar till initiativ såsom Ditt Europa, Konsument Europa och SOLVIT. De finns till för att hjälpa EU-medborgare och EU-företag att dra nytta av den inre marknaden. De är till exempel också nyttiga för svenska medborgare som vill bo och arbeta i Finland. Island och Norge deltar också i vissa av dessa EU-initiativ i egenskap av EES-medlemmar.

Jag vill sammanfattningsvis säga att granskningen av EU:s Östersjöstrategi borde användas som en förbättrad koordinering med relevanta initiativ av Nordiska rådet. Gemensamma prioriteringar borde utvecklas till konkreta åtgärder. Självklart ser jag fram emot fortsatta fruktbara diskussioner under denna session. Tack!
