The Nordic countries collaborate to build knowledge and develop effective means and policy measures to reduce marine plastics and microplastics. The collaboration also support the Nordics as a driving force in the negotiations for a global agreement on plastics.

The project will contribute to reducing plastic waste and microplastics in the sea, water and on land.

The project will support the work of reaching a global agreement on plastics and be able to complement the regional maritime convention work, the Basel Convention, the EU work and other relevant international work by further mapping and proposing measures relating to the plastic life cycle and promoting a circular economy. Activities include, among other things, supporting voluntary beach cleaning / remediation measures, measures in the event of major accidents involving the release of plastic pellets, preventive measures in the use phase and mapping of indicators for plastic leakage in the plastic value chain.

 

Overall goal:

  1. Reduce plastic waste and microplastics in ocean, land and water, and increase reuse of plastics and more efficient use of plastic resources. 
  2. Nordics as a driving force against plastic pollution regionally and globally. 

 

Objectives:

  1. Nordic countries cooperation to build knowledge and develop effective means and policy measures to reduce marine plastics and microplastics (public, private sector and civil society).
  2. The Nordics plays a proactive role in regional and global forum to strengthen the work against marine littering. This includes reports to supplement the implementation of regional action plans against marine littering under regional sea conventions. 
  3. The Nordics have a leading role in initiating the process of a global agreement on plastics pollution. 

 

Budget: 8 mio. DKK.
