With four events and participation in three panels, Nordic Co-operation has a strong presence at the UN biodiversity meeting, COP16, in Cali, Bolivia.

The lack of funding to back youth engagement, sustainable use of genetic resources, the importance of the global biodiversity agreement for the private business community and the pivotal role of nature-based solutions are among the topics that Nordic co-operation is taking to COP16.

Advancing Nature-based Solutions with Strategic Multilevel Governance

Join us when we explore the pivotal role of multilevel governance in implementing Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for high-level actions, capacity building, and knowledge sharing. The event will highlight the relevance of establishing NbS national and regional hubs, fostering interest and engagement. Additionally, it will announce a publication demonstrating exemplary regional cooperation on NbS between Europe and Latin America, emphasising collaboration pathways across continents. The aim is to underline the importance of these collaborative efforts in advancing NbS at different levels of governance and between continents to inspire further initiatives and partnerships in this field.

From deserts and rainforests to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault– genebanks’ role in conserving and promoting a sustainable use of genetic resources

In the best of worlds, genetic resources would be safeguarded in nature and allowed to thrive and contribute to a sustainable development without risk. However, in reality ex situ conservation is needed to minimize the loss of valuable genetic diversity. But how do we make sure that genebanks are not just seed museums? How do we promote a sustainable use of the genetic resources that genebanks conserve? In this discussion, we share info on how genebanks work and why safety backup of seeds in the Arctic is an important part of the puzzle.

A Nordic reception focused on biodiversity and youth inclusion in policy making featuring insights from Nordic representatives and young biodiversity advocates. The evening includes a special performance by renowned Sámi artist Jon Henrik Fjällgren, who is know for blending traditional joik with contemporary sounds, and attendees will have the opportunity to network with policymakers, environmental experts, and Nordic institutions over food and beverages.

Through engaging panel discussions, participants will examine youth-led initiatives, funding opportunities, and strategies to improve access to financial resources. The session will emphasize mobilizing support from philanthropies, banks, and governments while identifying the barriers youth encounter in securing funds. By fostering partnerships and sharing best practices, this event aims to promote collaborative funding efforts that empower young stakeholders in biodiversity and climate action.

UNESCO biosphere reserves: addressing the triple planetary crises through science, journalism and the arts

This event explores existing tools and efforts to build a strong information ecosystem in support of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Taking as point of departure the critical role of scientists, journalists and artists in covering biodiversity issues, the side-event will zoom in on how to ensure enabling work environments for scientific communities, and professionals from the media and culture sector. 

Science communication on the biodiversity crisis to Youth – Uptake from IPBES

Case on national uptake of the results from the platform on biodiversity IPBES – presentation of the development of educational material on the biodiversity crisis to high schools linking the global to the local level. About 60% of high schools and 60% of libraries in the country have the material.

With the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the urgency of addressing the biodiversity crisis has been underscored by both the public and the private sector globally. Here in Cali, the focus will be on the provision of means for implementation with finance, capacity building, technology, legislation and measurement tools as essential elements.

 

This event will have a strong focus on how to secure finance for biodiversity, but also build on the necessary cross-sector collaboration.  How do we secure investments at scale in biodiversity?
