Greenland's first sustainability-certified construction project.

Boligselskabet Iserit A/S has been nominated for the Nordic Council Environment Prize 2024

In Greenland, where the ice is now melting at six times the pace previously calculated, the municipal housing company Iserit A/S is behind a remarkable construction project, which re-thought and greened everything from the way materials were produced, transport, working conditions, waste management and social circumstances.

The company built 48 DGNB-certified apartments in Nuuk in 2022. DGNB certification is based on the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals and accords equal weight to the environment, economy and social conditions. The certification scheme had to be adapted to suit local conditions in Greenland, a process carried out in collaboration with the Green Building Council in Denmark. For example, the parameters for energy consumption and total costs have been adjusted because more heat is needed in a colder climate and because it is more expensive to build in Greenland, partly because of freight costs. The apartments use 50% less energy than the requirements stipulated in the building regulations.

Iserit has broken new ground and set an example in Greenland.
